Previous chapter -> Vignetting.

Smoothing - Use this effect to decrease artifacts and noise caused by excessive increase of detail levels.

"Smoothing" Pane

You can define the strength, location and size of contrasts that are to be smoothed out.

  • Noise - add smoothness to the smallest details (noise reduction).
  • Small contrasts - defines the level of smoothness for small contrasts (areas near the processed point).
  • Medium contrasts - defines the level of smoothness for medium contrasts (areas further from the processed point).
  • Dark / bright areas - masks (conceals) detail smoothing in dark and bright areas of the image. A value of 100 means complete visibility, while 0 – effect is completely absent.

Tip 1: If the "Noise" parameter has been employed simultaneously with the "Image -> Noise Reduction" option, large unified areas without details may form, which is undesirable. To eliminate this effect, decrease the value of the "Noise" parameter or switch off "Noise reduction" in the "Image" menu.

Tip 2: The "Noise"Medium Contrasts"Noise" parameter is perfect for smoothing out large, mainly unified areas in the image, e.g. the sky or water. To do this increase the value of this parameter to a much higher value than that of "Noise"Small Contrasts"Noise".

Source Image

An increase in detail levels has drawn out artifacts visible on the sky and snow in the lower right-hand corner of the image.

Small contrasts +50
Medium contrasts +200

Thanks to the smoothness effect, the artifacts are now concealed.
